Data center owners and developers are considering onsite or adjacent power generation to reduce dependence on constrained utility capacity and improve time to power. But the decision to pursue “bring your own power” (BYOP) is only the beginning. Execution strongly influences whether the strategy delivers its intended benefits.

BYOP changes the operating architecture of a data center by making prime power generation part of the system that supports the critical IT load. It adds or expands responsibilities for fuel logistics, utility coordination, emissions compliance, controls integration, and operation of the generation plant. Without coordinated planning, the schedule advantages that justified the strategy can be lost through late-stage redesign, permitting delays, incomplete modeling, commissioning failures, and unclear operational responsibilities.

This is especially important for AI-driven facilities, where rapid workload-driven power fluctuations can challenge onsite generation because a local plant has more limited response and balancing capability than a large interconnected utility grid.

BYOP execution

The paper identifies five critical success factors that strongly influence whether a BYOP project preserves its intended time-to-power advantage:

  • Early engagement with utilities, authorities, and partners: Defining intended operating modes and identifying interconnection, permitting, technical, and coordination requirements before architecture is fixed.
  • Co-design of generation plant and data center infrastructure: Designing generation, electrical infrastructure, uninterruptible power supply (UPS), battery energy storage system (BESS), cooling, controls, IT load, and the utility interface as an integrated system rather than separate workstreams.
  • Early preparation for system modeling, interconnection studies, and design validation: Establishing modeling and validation requirements early to reduce approval delays, redesign, and commissioning surprises.
  • Standardized, pre-engineered, and prefabricated solutions where possible: Using repeatable reference designs, standardized interfaces, and factory-integrated modules to reduce engineering effort, procurement complexity, installation risk, and commissioning delays.
  • A clearly defined operating model: Assigning responsibility for dispatch, fuel management, maintenance, emissions compliance, utility coordination, and emergency response before design and contracts are finalized.

BYOP implementation planning is critical to preserving the benefits that led the project team to choose the strategy in the first place. Projects that treat onsite generation as a separate upstream asset risk stranded capacity, control and integration problems, operational gaps, and the loss of the intended schedule advantage.
