Vertiv™ SwitchAir

Network switches, load balancers and routers typically sit at the top and back portion of the rack, away from the cold aisle airflow at the front of the cabinet. This placement makes it difficult for cold air to flow from the front of the rack to the air intakes of the network switch equipment, increasing chances of failure over time. Vertiv™ SwitchAir helps prevent failure by channeling cool air from the front of the rack to the air intakes regardless of where the equipment is mounted.

The Vertiv™ SwitchAir is a passive airflow management device with channels providing a dedicated path for cold aisle air to flow to the intake of the switch, using the on-board fans of the network devices to pull cool air from the front of the cabinet. The SwitchAir also creates a barrier preventing recirculation of hot exhaust air from the hot aisle from entering switch intakes.

    Frequently Asked Questions

The Vertiv™ SwitchAir is a passive airflow management device designed to prevent network switch overheating. Network switches, load balancers and routers typically sit at the upper rear portion of racks, away from cold aisle airflow. SwitchAir creates a dedicated channel for cool air to flow from the front of the rack to switch air intakes, while creating a barrier that prevents hot exhaust air from the hot aisle from recirculating into switch intakes.
Vertiv™ SwitchAir reduces the likelihood of premature equipment failure by directing cold aisle air to network device intakes. The device prevents switches from experiencing high intake temperatures that can cause overheating. By providing network equipment with the same cold aisle air temperature as other devices in the rack, Vertiv SwitchAir improves equipment efficiency and helps maintain proper operating conditions for reliable performance over time.
Vertiv™ SwitchAir models are available in 1U, 2U, 3U, and 9U rack unit profiles to accommodate different switch sizes. The device is designed for installation assuming a rail distance of 29.2 inches (74.16 centimeters). Vertiv SwitchAir installs quickly in all standard racks or cabinets and fits in the same rack unit space as the network equipment, making installation simple without requiring rack modifications.
Vertiv™ SwitchAir is TAA (Trade Agreements Act) and BAA (Buy American Act) compliant. These compliance certifications make the product suitable for government and public sector procurement requirements. Compliance documentation is available upon request to support procurement processes requiring verified country of origin information.
Vertiv™ SwitchAir decreases wraparound hot airflow from the hot aisle to the cold aisle that can occur when blanking panels are missing. By properly directing cool air to network equipment and preventing hot air recirculation, the device reduces the thermal load on room cooling systems. This improved airflow management allows cooling systems to operate more efficiently, potentially reducing energy consumption associated with maintaining proper data center temperatures.
