Smarter resilience: Advanced maintenance and battery technologies powering next-gen data centers

5 min. Read

Explore how the next generation of data center power backup is evolving with Vertiv™ EnergyCore Lithium cabinets, delivering enhanced uptime, reduced facility footprint, and smart monitoring capabilities for modern data centers facing AI-driven demands.

AI and high-performance computing are creating rapid, unpredictable swings in IT power demand. In addressing emerging concerns and technologies, the approach should also be adjusted. With traditional backup solutions struggling to deliver the reliability and intelligence needed for these dynamic loads, new innovations should be able to respond to current needs and anticipate emerging business goals and concerns.

Vertiv solves this challenge through the combined intelligence of its Vertiv™ EnergyCore Lithium cabinets and Vertiv™ Power Converters. The Vertiv™ EnergyCore Lithium battery cabinet addresses these challenges head-on, combining intelligent, data-driven battery management with advanced lithium ion (Li-ion) technology to transform how data centers approach power backup. Its BMS algorithm delivers high-accuracy state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) data under dynamic AI load conditions to the Vertiv™ Power Converters, providing real-time visibility through the primary cabinet’s graphic interface. This integrated intelligence allows operators to confirm battery availability via SOC capacity, supports forecasting end-of-life runtime via SOH percentage, and enables stable, power-smoothed operations.

1. From reactive to proactive: The new maintenance mindset

Most unplanned outages still stem from preventable equipment failures deployed through traditional approaches. Intelligent infrastructure—integrated and optimized physical assets through reconfiguration and digital technologies—can improve visibility. Through automated gathering and processing of event data for faster, customer-driven operational decisions and experiences, cyber-physical assets can be assessed in real-time.

According to Gartner ® report, “a cyber-physical asset spans physical safety and physical process as well as real-time connections to control and data acquisition networks, then into operational systems as well as IT systems.” Gartner also notes, “As new digital interfaces and integrations expand the attack surface and introduce new vulnerabilities, the alignment of IT, OT, ET, and customer technologies (CTs) and comprehensive utility-focused security strategies is essential. Persistent risk is amplified by diminishing resources and skills needed to maintain these systems and the inability to manage real-time events quickly enough to ensure [sic] resilient operations.”

As an example, lead-acid batteries offer limited visibility into performance trends, leaving operators relying on manual checks or runtime tests. Vertiv™ EnergyCore Lithium battery cabinets set a new standard with integrated intelligence. Its battery cabinet’s enhanced battery management system (BMS) monitors SOC and SOH, offering real-time insights for planned maintenance when power smoothing AI loads.

  • Operators will quickly detect performance issues.
  • Maintenance shifts from reactive to proactive.
  • AI-driven dynamic load conditions see improved runtime accuracy.

These proactive, BMS-informed insights are supported by regularly updated monitoring software and service plans, helping operators remotely monitor battery health, performance, and lifecycle in one unified interface.

2. Smart monitoring meets cyber resilience

The modern data center’s intelligence layer introduces new cybersecurity considerations. Uptime Institute’s 2025 report “DCIM vulnerabilities increase threats of cyberattacks” warns that monitoring tools can become an attack surface if not properly managed.

Vertiv™ EnergyCore Lithium battery cabinet employs architecture that features a patent-pending BMS design, secure communication protocols (i.e., MODBUS TCP/IP, SNMP), and isolated network interfaces. These features work together to facilitate uninterrupted monitoring while maintaining operational security.

3. Environmental responsibility through design: Smaller footprint, lower carbon impact

Research from S&P Global's 451 Research Hyperscale Sustainability Studies 2025 Parts 1 and 2 and the Uptime Institute Global Data Center Survey 2025 show that operators are prioritizing technologies that maximize and upgrade their use of space, all the while minimizing energy waste.

Compared to valve-regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries, Vertiv™ EnergyCore Lithium batteries:

  • Lasts longer (10–15 years vs. VRLA batteries three to five years)
  • Weighs less and saves up floor space
  • Tolerates higher temperatures, lessening dependence on cooling systems and reducing cooling energy consumption
  • Minimizes replacements, lowering lifecycle carbon footprint

Its compact, convective cooling design and compliance with UL 9540A standards allow closer rack placement, freeing up valuable white space while maintaining safety.

4. Enabling Li-ion adoption at scale

Industry research indicates ongoing development of battery technologies, but Lithium-ion continues to dominate hyperscale and colocation deployments. Vertiv™ EnergyCore Lithium cabinets are purpose-built to accelerate this transition.

Factory-tested, quality assured, and pre-assembled, Vertiv EnergyCore Lithium cabinets integrate directly with Vertiv™ Power Converters. It is compliant with UL9540 requirements for integration with modern and legacy uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, such as Vertiv™ Trinergy™, Vertiv™ PowerUPS 9000, Vertiv™ Liebert® APM2, Vertiv™ Liebert® EXL S1, and Vertiv™ Liebert® Trinergy™ Cube power converters. This can help reduce installation time and complexity, as well as startup, testing, and commissioning at new and upgraded data centers running AI loads. This compatibility helps operators modernize without extensive re-engineering, lowering total cost of ownership (TCO).

5. Total system confidence: Integration and service

Vertiv™ EnergyCore Lithium cabinet connects seamlessly with Vertiv™ Power Converters, monitoring software such as Vertiv™ Next Predict and Vertiv™ Unify, and service plans, providing one trusted partner for design, deployment, and lifecycle support. The result: a safer, smarter, and more responsible approach to critical power ready for the AI-powered data center era.

A smarter path forward

Vertiv™ EnergyCore Lithium battery is a strategic investment in uptime, responsible business, and peace of mind. Proactive, condition-based maintenance enabled by intelligent battery management, advanced Lithium-ion chemistry, and real-time monitoring are becoming foundational to modern power infrastructure resilience. With built-in monitoring capabilities that track performance at the cell level and a design optimized for AI-driven environments, the Vertiv™ EnergyCore Lithium battery represents a significant shift from conventional battery systems that rely on manual oversight and reactive maintenance.
