Overview
World Wide Technology (WWT) relies on Vertiv™ Geist™ Rack Power Distribution Units (rPDUs) to support high-density AI workloads within its Advanced Technology Center (ATC). With a data center comprising over 500 racks, WWT needed reliable, scalable power solutions to accommodate the increasing demands of AI computing. Vertiv’s innovative rPDU technology provides the capacity, flexibility, and monitoring capabilities essential for supporting next-generation IT infrastructure.
Background
WWT is a global technology solutions provider that helps enterprises accelerate digital transformation. Its ATC serves as a testing ground for cutting-edge technology, allowing clients to validate and develop AI solutions. The ATC data center supports AI-ready Dell XE9680 servers with NVIDIA H100 GPUs and Cisco X series high-performance networking infrastructure, making rack-level power management critical to ensuring seamless operations.
Critical need of WWT
AI-driven workloads place unprecedented power demands on data centers. As clients prepared to scale AI capabilities, WWT identified power distribution as a primary concern. Traditional rPDUs lacked the capacity, efficiency, and intelligent monitoring needed to manage these high-density workloads effectively. The challenge was to implement a robust power solution capable of handling AI’s higher power requirements while maintaining redundancy, efficient cable management, and real-time power monitoring.
Solution and results
WWT deployed Vertiv™ Geist™ rPDUs, which provided:
- High-capacity power distribution to support AI servers and network infrastructure
- Alternating-phase, color-coded receptacles for simplified load balancing and cable management
- Combination outlets compatible with both C13 and C19 plugs, ensuring seamless equipment integration
- Receptacle-level power monitoring for real-time visibility and proactive management
- A pivoting connector to accommodate different facility-side cables, allowing standardization across multiple data centers
“With Vertiv rPDUs, we have the reliability, capacity, and operating flexibility needed to manage changing power requirements within the rack,” said Geoff Hubbard, Senior Manager of Data Center Operations at WWT’s ATC. “Plus, Vertiv offers a portfolio of products that extend across the power stack, enabling facility managers to handle the higher loads that AI brings.”
