Brad Luyster–Achieving Sustainability with Hybrid Ecosystems

Vertiv's Director of Business Development Energy Storage, Brad Luyster, led the successful completion of a solar field project in North America. The project team addressed issues of unreliable power supply and prohibitive costs through strategic planning and innovative solutions, including movable panels and a grid-tied system.

Utilizing an advanced Power Management System (PMS) that incorporates machine learning, predicts energy demand, stores excess power, and ensures a reliable supply, significantly improving efficiency. According to Brad, “the PMS is crucial in managing both fossil and renewable power sources–optimizing the operation of gensets while balancing the two sources.”

"Sustainability and reliability are not mutually exclusive, and operators do not need to go for 100% sustainability from the outset."

According to Brad, organizations that are considering a transition to hybrid power can do so gradually by incorporating renewable energy solutions into their operations. This strategic approach allows businesses to balance their immediate operational needs with their sustainability goals effectively, enabling a seamless transition towards more environmentally friendly practices. “Sustainability and reliability are not mutually exclusive,” says Brad, adding– “It is important to note that even if achieving 100% sustainability seems impossible, it is still worthwhile to do what you can, where you can." He emphasizes that operators should not feel discouraged and should make sustainability a priority, even if it cannot be fully achieved from the outset.

Peter Panfil–Revolutionizing Energy Solutions with Hydrogen Fuel Cell Generator Project

The H2 Generator Project, led by Peter Panfil, VP of Global Power at Vertiv, is a groundbreaking initiative towards sustainable energy solutions. By exploring hydrogen fuel cells, this project demonstrates Vertiv's commitment to explore eco-friendly alternatives by combining scientific curiosity with environmental responsibility.

Researchers have explored hydrogen fuel cell technology as a promising alternative energy source. However, several technical and logistical challenges have prevented its adoption—for example, concerns around the safe transportation and storage of hydrogen. Additionally, fuel cell systems have been expensive to produce, deploy, and maintain.

“Hydrogen fuel cell technologies are evolving and becoming more mature, and we could see fuel cells used as continuous duty batteries.”

Investing in hydrogen fuel cells is a promising choice due to their many advantages. Fuel cells produce only water and heat, reducing emissions and air pollution. They are also more efficient than combustion engines, with higher energy conversion rates and longer lifetimes.

Safe hydrogen storage, transport, and on-site production are becoming more feasible, offering economic benefits, and supporting ESG goals by reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Peter adds, “Hydrogen fuel cell technologies are evolving and becoming more mature, and we could see fuel cells used as continuous duty batteries.”

Peter believes in the transformative power of hydrogen to reshape the future of energy, adding, "Transitioning to hydrogen energy is significant but promises numerous benefits." They see hydrogen fuel cells playing a pivotal role in helping organizations meet their ESG goals, thanks to their potential to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and diesel.

Organizations that are interested in implementing projects like the H2 Generator Project should consider approaching the transition as a gradual process. This initiative will enable adjustments, facilitate learning, and lead to the successful adoption of renewable energy solutions.

Dan Rapp and Merry Sroufe–Driving Community Engagement Through Pelotonia

Dan Rapp, ESG and Environmental Affairs Leader, and Mary Sroufe, Recruiter at Vertiv, have been instrumental in steering Vertiv's involvement in Pelotonia a non-profit organization founded in 2008 dedicated to funding cancer research through community-led biking, volunteering, and fundraising events.

After realizing the impact of cancer on many lives, a group of passionate Vertiv employees joined Pelotonia. In addition to giving financial support, Vertiv has been actively involved in the project, with its employees volunteering their time, participating in bike rides, and raising awareness through active social media engagement.

"Our involvement in Pelotonia was inspired by our desire to make a tangible impact on the communities we serve."

Participating in Pelotonia is a way to emphasize the significance of community engagement and dedicating time and resources to support essential causes. Dan says, "Our involvement in Pelotonia is driven by our desire to make a real difference in the communities we serve."

Team Vertiv Peloton is one such team that is making a difference. Since 2020, they have raised over $114,000, and all the funds have gone towards supporting The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center at The James. Dan adds, "Although the team started small, participation and fundraising have grown. Our team raised over $30,000 this year for cancer research, and we aim to keep going."

Dan offers guidance to companies seeking to start such initiatives.: "Identify initiatives that resonate with your employees and company values and align with your ESG strategy. The key is to participate wholeheartedly, as authentic engagement drives impact."
