800 VDC architecture selection for high-density AI compute

12 min. Ler

As the AI era continues to progress and demand increases, conventional AC distribution is running out of physical space for conductors, connectors, and cooling infrastructure. 800 VDC offers a path forward. Operators can use this paper’s framework to evaluate each decision criteria and design element every deployment must address.

As AI rack densities push past 100 kW and accelerate toward 1 MW per rack, conventional voltages like 240/415 VAC distribution hit a hard ceiling. There simply isn't enough physical space for the conductors, connectors, and cooling infrastructure that alternating current (AC) demands at scale. The industry needs a different voltage class, and 800 VDC is the leading candidate, established by the maturity of the electric vehicle sector.

Most 800 VDC architectures are not a plug-and-play decision. The infrastructure introduces a fundamentally different set of engineering challenges. The choice will shape the data center’s reliability, safety procedures, and operational complexity.

Read this white paper to understand why:

  • Rack-level architecture is the recommended near-term approach. Facility-level architecture leads on conversion efficiency and token throughput, but faces supply chain and standards gaps that limit near-term viability.
  • DC arc behavior demands purpose-built protection. Unlike AC systems, direct current (DC) has no zero-crossing point to naturally extinguish arcs. Solid-state circuit breakers capable of clearing faults in microseconds, arc-resistant enclosures, and touch-proof connectors become baseline requirements for some architectures .
  • AI training loads create power transients that propagate across the entire cluster. Synchronous GPU workloads generate current slew rates of 10 to 100 amps per nanosecond at the die level. By the time these transients reach the power rack, they operate at kilohertz frequencies, requiring carefully sized capacitance and low-inductance distribution paths.
  • Grounding and isolation strategy directly influence system availability. High-resistance grounding allows continued operation through a first ground fault, while solidly grounded systems trip immediately. The choice carries real consequences for uptime, shock hazard, and insulation monitoring requirements.
  • Maintenance protocols must account for hazards unique to DC. Bus capacitance and battery backup modules hold dangerous voltage for seconds to minutes after isolation. Pre-charge sequencing, directional contact wear, and clear facilities-to-IT demarcation lines are all operational realities that AC-trained teams may not anticipate.
  • When evaluating equipment vendors, confirm their ability to provide competent service support through documented maintenance procedures and ongoing workforce development alongside the hardware. Begin developing or sourcing 800 VDC-specific service competencies that address DC arc flash analysis, PPE selection, capacitor discharge and pre-charge procedures, polarity verification, and protection technology-specific maintenance.

A future-ready framework, starting today

Eight decision criteria are evaluated across rack-level and facility-level architectures, producing a clear recommendation grounded in current supply chain realities, regulatory readiness, and operational risk. From there, eight design elements are examined in detail: arc flash mitigation, circuit protection and selectivity, dynamic AI load management, distribution polarity, isolation and grounding, maintenance, resiliency, and workforce competency and training. Each section addresses the underlying engineering challenge, available design options, and the trade-offs between competing approaches. Backed by data and analysis, this guide treats 800 VDC not as a product category but as a system-level design variable with cascading implications across safety, availability, and long-term operational cost.
