As the digitization of Latin American economies continues to grow, some hyperscale data centers in the region are looking for thermal management technologies that support large implementations of servers and other IT systems with higher power and heat dissipation requirements.
This was the challenge faced by a hyperscale infrastructure client based in Colombia, who turned to Vertiv in search of an alternative to traditional data center cooling that would allow them to meet the high-density requirements of their server racks, while also homogenizing the airflow throughout their new raised floor data center in Bogotá.
In response to this challenge, the Vertiv team was able to offer a tailored solution that could address their specific needs- the Vertiv Thermal Wall. This innovative cooling system breaks away from the traditional approach and relies on a chilled wáter-based fan wall to increase density and efficiency in data center cooling.
How does this innovative system work?
The Vertiv™ Thermal Wall is a modular arrangement of coils; smart controls operate the coil with the ability to move air in capacities of 250 kW, 350 kW, and 500 kW. These coils are located around the perimeter of the white space, facilitating the heat exchange between the hot air from the IT load and the cold water from a Chiller system. The cold air is propelled from the heat exchangers to the IT racks by an EC Fan module and an intelligent control system that adjusts both water and air flow based on data from sensors in the server racks, where temperature conditions for IT equipment can be maintained, in compliance with ASHRAE 9.9 recommendations.
The Vertiv Thermal Wall can be integrated with the data center's chilled water system to enhance the operational conditions of the entire network.
Compared to a traditional solution, Vertiv Thermal Wall offers greater cooling capacity in a more compact unit, consumes less energy, maximizes energy efficiency, and optimizes space within the white space.
Recognition of Innovation
In the latest edition of the DCD Latam Awards 2023, held in Cancun in September, Vertiv received an award in the "Mission Critical Tech Innovation" category for the Thermal Wall solution. This recognition highlights excellence in the development of cutting-edge cooling solutions and qualifies it as one of the best innovation technologies in the data center market.
