Prefabricated Data Centers: Agile and Efficient Solutions from the Core to the Edge of the Network

Alex Nivar •

By Alex Nivar, Vertiv sales manager for Mexico and NSA (North of South America)

If any company was postponing updating its mission critical infrastructure, today it faces the greatest challenge of the last decades, the continuity challenges derived from the pandemic.

Companies offering vital services such as hospitals, government, banking, and telcos, among others, found that their critical infrastructure could not cope with the high demand for new data traffic requirements.

A clear example is the network operators. The closure of workplaces and compulsory quarantine have caused an exponential increase in the use of telecommunications networks to solve problems such as social connectivity, access to information, demand for entertainment (video streaming, games, etc.), use professional (video calls, videoconferences, etc.), thus generating saturation in networks. This has put operators in check, who have been affected by trying to ensure adequate quality levels for their customers.

The increasingly variable demands and requirements of connectivity, bandwidths, data traffic, among others, will accelerate the implementation of the sites on the edge of the network (edge), and make the deployment of the 5G network reach faster than anticipated.

Data centers at the edge of the network have been gaining relevance for some time, since they facilitate the processing of data near the source where they originate, contrary to the data centers (core) or in the nucleus that are more centralized and constitute the heart of the network.

One technology that addresses the challenges facing the data center industry is building efficient, agile, and globally consistent core-on-the-edge solutions, such as prefabricated modular data centers (PFMs).

At Vertiv we are working closely with our business partners in Central America and the Caribbean to offer fully integrated and intelligent solutions, designed for an agile, fast and secure implementation.

Whether you want to configure the small data center faster, expand capacity with cloud services and colocation, or install an undersea cable station, ready-made solutions are a great option. Low-risk, high-value deployments have the added benefits of fast delivery and easier onsite assembly.

We know that each project is different and that the selection, assembly and configuration of new solutions vary by application, but most prefabricated data centers have similar benefits. In mine experience, for example, for smaller solutions you can achieve up to 67% savings in implementation time and up to 53% savings in operating costs.

I enclose the key benefits of integrated data center solutions for businesses looking to accelerate their data center (DC) deployment.

Fast Design: Leveraging the designs of the repeatable sub-system components allows for simplicity, leading to a low-risk, efficient, and automated design process. Mass customization for mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) designs are uniquely made, easy to operate and inexpensive using a system that uses a standardized and repetitive modular approach.

This efficiency in the early part of the process can reduce installation time by months, and organizations looking to accelerate implementation should consider it an option.

In addition, the component set of standards removes inherent limitations in functionality or aesthetics.

Custom integration: Highly complex electrical and mechanical integration activities are offloaded at the factory, where quality and speed can be maintained. All systems are designed and configured together, resulting in a carefully integrated installation that can meet the highest standards of availability and efficiency.

Assembly in a factory-controlled environment allows greater control over fit, finish, and job quality, and withstands previous testing and more thorough optimization.

Simple Assembly: Clear and concise documentation provides essential equipment information to assemble modules effortlessly. Orientation to assembly, rather than construction and integration, dramatically reduces complexity, as well as the risk of malfunction or the installation of a misconfigured system. Barrier-free assembly enables deployment anywhere on the globe, without the need for experienced and highly trained local construction teams at each location. This creates opportunities to extend global reach to regions of the world that were previously considered inaccessible.

PFM is on the rise towards the top with total risk reduction through better quality controls, repeatable results and simplified project management.
