With a Mother’s Soul in the Digital Age

Angélica Molinas •

When I think about the world I want to leave for my daughter, I always imagine an environment full of opportunities for her—a world where technology continues to be an ally of humanity in improving the environment; a place where women can keep succeeding in both professional and personal roles, without fear of thriving or doing it all.

Motherhood has taught me that life is built from small moments. Each second is more valuable than the last, and we must contribute to raising little humans who are confident in themselves—who embrace change without fear and with enough resilience.

My daughter has always been curious about what I do for a living. Over time, I’ve found that using simple, everyday examples helps me explain what we do at Vertiv. I’ve told her that mommy works at a company that protects information and data for the future. That every time she swipes to watch her favorite movies, she’s creating data—data that we help power and cool. I want her to understand that my work is deeply connected to many things happening around her. It may be extraordinary, but it’s part of her everyday life.

Not long ago, after returning from one of her classes, she asked me how my job helps take care of the planet. She insisted, with all the urgency only a six-year-old can bring, that the Earth is sick and needs our help. I told her that’s exactly why I feel proud to work with purpose—using my role in marketing to communicate how Vertiv is growing in innovative and responsible ways. She is my first stakeholder. It’s my job to explain, in simple terms, how everyone can help to use less water, use less electricity, but still be able to use the technology that makes our lives easier.

This is her present. Her future will bring countless new challenges and will likely move at a faster pace than anything we can imagine today. I always tell her that I work at a company that is grounded in today but focused on tomorrow.

By the time she becomes a professional—around 2050—according to the United Nations, 75% of jobs will be connected to STEM fields. I’d love for her to see technology as a career where she can grow, from many different angles, contributing to development and positive change. For me, being able to share with her the privilege of seeing innovation up close every day is both powerful and inspiring.

Being a mother is not easy but when you Being a mother isn’t easy, but having a support network—whether it’s a partner, friends, or colleagues—can make a world of difference.. I’ve been very fortunate to be surrounded in my professional life by incredible moms—women who balance their career growth with being a source of love and stability for their children. Being a mother is not easy—it never has been—but being one in a century where everything changes so fast is truly challenging. Just as we have the great advantage of access to a connected world full of technological possibilities, it’s also important to recognize that technology should be implemented to support our children—not to distract them. We must model the best use of it through our own example and actions.

In these times of change, I want to share my personal policy: always tell a mother she’s doing a good job. There is nothing more comforting than hearing that, even though it’s not easy, someone understands you, is empathetic, and doesn’t judge. We all have our own story, our own challenges.

Even though no one gave us a manual on how to be mothers, life becomes incredibly meaningful when that son or daughter becomes our greatest teacher. We can bring that humanity into our leadership, our growth, and—most importantly—we can build a network of women who support and uplift one another and pass that legacy of support on to our children.

Today, on this Mother’s Day, I want to recognize all mothers—those who are mothers by biology, by adoption, by caregiving… Those who give their best to help the world grow with better human beings—people who will face a challenging landscape, but who will enjoy the great advances of humanity, and who will have in their hands the opportunity to live in a more generous world and a future full of great progress.

Don’t forget—we’re doing a good job.
