The project implemented by Movistar and developed by Vertiv has reduced fuel consumption and operational costs of hybrid sites
Santiago, Chile [February 20, 2020] - To keep its infrastructure updated for 4G technologies and to prepare for future 5G opportunities, Movistar Chile is deploying Vertiv support solutions in sites that are not connected to the power grid. This updated infrastructure is designed to improve efficiency and reduce energy consumption.
Movistar Chile, a Telefónica Group company, seeks to meet the demands of current and future networks and to cope with the increase in energy usage that this requires.The solution developed by Vertiv improves energy efficiency through a hybrid configuration, where the diesel generator operates for a period not exceeding four hours per day (1,460 hours per year). In this way, Movistar reduced the operational cost of hybrid sites and reduced fuel consumption by approximately US $240,000 per year. In addition, by reducing the maintenance of the diesel generator from 13 service calls per year to one every eight months, a significant return on investment was achieved, and energy efficiency was increased to keep adapting to a larger technology infrastructure.
Vertiv's solution design included solar panels, NetSure™ 5100 hybrid controllers, battery banks, diesel generators, inverters, control and monitoring with Trellis™ Critical Insight, in addition to the installation and commissioning of all equipment.
“The development of the project for Telefonica was a best practice for Vertiv in Chile. We built an innovative solution with a hybrid design that allowed us to meet the objectives set by the client: continue broadband availability for users in isolated areas throughout the country, with improved energy and cost efficiency, and a positive impact on the environment”, explained Daniel de Vinatea, general manager SSA, South America, Vertiv. “This project reduced the hours of use of a diesel generator from 14 to only 4 per day, replacing this energy with solar energy”.
A second result of the successful Vertiv pilot project for Telefónica was the expansion of the scope of this agreement from Chile to all central and access sites in Europe and Latin America.
